Deck Builders Albany is the show where we answer practical outdoor living questions for homeowners in Albany, NY and nearby communities like Loudonville, Slingerlands, and Bethlehem. In this episode, we talk through one question we hear often: can you put a fire pit on a deck? The short answer is that it depends on the type of fire feature, the deck surface, the layout around it, and the rules that apply to your property. A wood-burning fire pit on a deck brings more heat, embers, and ash, so it usually calls for much more caution than homeowners expect. Gas fire tables are often a safer choice than wood-burning options for deck use because they are easier to control and can be paired with the right clearances and setup. Even then, safety depends on following the manufacturer’s instructions, keeping proper spacing from railings, furniture, and overhead features, and using heat-resistant pads where appropriate. In our climate, that matters even more. Cold, snowy winters and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can affect the way deck surfaces and accessories hold up over time, while humid summers can add their own wear considerations. If you are comparing surface and accessory options, Duradek is one educational example homeowners may hear about when looking at waterproof deck systems, but the right choice always depends on the full project and how you plan to use the space. We also cover why local fire rules and HOA restrictions can change what is allowed, even when a setup seems reasonable from a design standpoint. Our goal is to help you make a safe, practical decision before you add heat and flame to your deck.
