Rob first came across the work of Dr. Jacob Katz in the book Upstream by Langdon Cook. The chapter was titled “Make Way for the Floodplain Fatties”. Cook detailed research by CalTrout that showed salmon grew larger when feeding in flooded rice fields along the Sacramento Delta. Jacob Katz holds a PH.D. in ecology at the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. He currently directs CalTrout’s Central California region where his work focuses on redesigning California’s antiquated water infrastructure. The Nigiri Project mission is to “Scientifically demonstrate that productivity created by shallow inundation of floodplains is foundational to supporting self-sustaining populations of fish and wildlife in the Central Valley.”
Rob and Dr. Katz discuss all things salmon living in an altered environment along the California coast. They talk everything from conservation, geology, and tacos.

Julie Mattson was born and raised in Montana. At the age of ten, Julie met Joan Wulff, and her life in fly fishing began. Julie has guided in Montana and Alaska. She currently lives and guides near Beavers Bend State Park and Broken Bow, Oklahoma, on the beautiful Lower Mountain Fork River. We’ll hear stories from Julie’s life as a guide, competitive angler, and dubbing addict. She talks about snakes, bears, and tarantulas that she’s encountered while guiding. Spring Creek Trout With Mike Heck

The DC Metro area has been in a drought for months. The Potomac River has been at the lowest levels in years. The gauge at Little Falls recently reported a low of 2.4'. Rob decided to take advantage of the low water to explore a low dam that is normally submerged. He and his friend Dan followed the shoreline right up to the dam. The water was extremely low, the wind was howling, and the smallies were biting. Dan temporarily lost his had in the wind. He was able to fish that out. However, if you find the tip top to an Orvis TLS rod along this stretch please let us know.

RJ discusses the three types of properties available for booking and explains how these are private properties with unfished waters. The company is not buying up properties and making the waters private. The land is already privately owned, and the owners can make some side money while anglers camp and fish or stay at an existing building. Rob invited author and angler Steve Hawley to discuss his latest book - Cracked: The Future of Dams in a Hot, Chaotic World. This is another beautiful production from Patagonia Books. Steve Hawley is an environmental journalist who writes about rivers, dams, and the ecological impacts they have on salmonids in the American West. His latest book was released in May 2023. He is the writer and co-producer of an award-winning documentary, Dammed to Extinction, and the author of Recovering a Lost River. We learn about Steve’s life along the inland Columbia River of Oregon, his fishing habits, how this book came to be, and the damages dams cause to our fragile planet.
