Warnings about AI's potential risks have escalated rapidly after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, a former OpenAI employee, resigned and accused AI companies of knowingly gambling with human lives. Coxon warned that unchecked, self-improving artificial intelligence could pose a catastrophic threat to humanity within a decade if development does not slow down.
The fallout from his departure has reignited a debate over AI regulation in Congress, where legislative discussions were recently overshadowed by controversy over AI data centers. Meanwhile, members of the Trump administration, including the President, have questioned the timing of the warnings, which came less than two months before the midterm elections.
Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology and a featured voice in the Netflix documentary The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, discussed escalating risks, recent AI safety tests that went rogue, and growing calls for industry restraint. The interview took place after Coxon's departure, but before Anthropic's CEO publicly responded by calling for a collective effort to slow the pace of development.
