In 2004, European robins inside a small wooden hut in Germany suddenly lost their sense of direction. The birds could still navigate normally when researchers blocked the faint electromagnetic noise around them. That failure became a clue to one of biology’s longest-running mysteries: how birds detect Earth’s magnetic field — and whether the answer involves a light-sensitive chemical reaction inside the eye. More than fifty years after the sense was demonstrated experimentally, its receptor has still not been identified. ─────────────────────────────── IN THIS EPISODE— Robins that navigate using the angle of Earth’s magnetic field— Why ordinary electromagnetic noise disrupted their compass— Cryptochrome, radical pairs, and the quantum-biology hypothesis— Why the actual magnetic receptor remains unidentified SOURCESScience, 1972Nature, 2014Nature, 2021Journal of Experimental Biology, 2025 ─────────────────────────────── Narration in this episode is AI-assisted.
