On September 26, 1983, a Soviet satellite detected five incoming American nuclear missiles. None had been launched. Inside a command bunker near Moscow, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov had minutes to decide whether to trust a warning system reporting an attack with near certainty. His decision exposed a remarkable technological failure — and became the basis for one of the Cold War's most extraordinary stories. But did he really save the world from nuclear war? The historical record offers a more complicated answer. ─────────────────────────────── **IN THIS EPISODE** — Why five missiles made no sense as an American first strike — How sunlight reflected from clouds fooled a Soviet warning satellite — The twenty-three minutes Petrov waited for confirmation — What he actually prevented — and what history cannot establish **SOURCES** — BBC — Interviews with Stanislav Petrov — Associated Press — Stanislav Petrov interview — Yury Votintsev — Memoirs (1998) — Russian Mission to the United Nations — Statement (2006) ─────────────────────────────── Narration in this episode is AI-assisted.
