Every month, you receive a number. You check it, you nod, and you move on.But do you actually understand every line on your salary slip? Do you know which parts affect your gratuity, and whether your deductions are correct? Most Gulf professionals do not, and that gap in understanding costs them, sometimes significantly. In this episode, Fahad Al Rawahi walks through a typical Gulf salary slip, line by line. What you will learn:🔹 1. Basic salary: the number that matters most Your basic salary is the base component before allowances, and it is often the smallest number on the slip, typically 30 to 50% of your total package. It matters because your end-of-service gratuity is usually calculated on basic salary alone. With a $2,000 basic in a $5,000 package, your gratuity is calculated on $2,000. Over 10 years, that difference is enormous. When negotiating, always push to raise the basic, not just the allowances.🔹 2. Housing allowance Usually the largest allowance, often 25 to 30% of the package. A cash allowance may be taxable in your home country if you still have tax obligations there.🔹 3. Transport allowance A fixed monthly amount for commuting. It does not count towards your gratuity.🔹 4. Other allowances Food, phone, professional development or hardship allowances. They boost take-home pay but do not affect gratuity or loan eligibility the way basic salary does.🔹 5. Deductions Loan repayments assigned directly from salary, pension contributions, and social insurance in some countries. Expats in the Gulf generally pay no income tax, but deductions still reduce your net pay. Check each one against what you agreed to, especially salary assignment loan deductions.🔹 6. Net pay What actually reaches your account: basic salary plus allowances, minus deductions. If the arithmetic does not work, ask HR. Payroll errors are more common than most people assume.🔹 What to do this weekRequest an itemised salary slip if you do not receive one.Calculate what your gratuity would be today, based on your basic salary and years of service. If your basic has not grown in line with your total package, raise it at your next negotiation.Photograph your slip and build a simple tracker: basic salary, total package and gratuity entitlement. Update it once a year.🔹 Your salary slip is a negotiation document Every number on it can change at renewal, if you understand what it represents and have the market research to support a different figure. If your salary has not been formally reviewed in more than 18 months, that review is overdue. Inflation in the Gulf has been real, and a salary that has not grown has effectively shrunk. The professionals who manage their careers like financial assets, who track compensation, benchmark it annually and negotiate proactively, earn significantly more over a 10-year Gulf career than those who simply accept what
