American audiences that were against the Vietnam War gravitated towards it. Due to its grounded depiction of urban resilience and guerilla warfare groups such as the PLO and the Black Panthers had screenings of this film. Even the Pentagon had screenings of this film.This highly controversial film is regarded currently as a fair and balanced depiction of a sociopolitical quagmire in post-war France and Northern Africa.
